Steps for the entrance have constantly been changing but one thing has stayed, the requirement for the steps to have a dual purpose and provide seating. The seating will hold audience for the floating stage and also provide a platform for people watching.
Difficulty with the steps has been meeting building regs and fitting all 20 steps that are required. The steps also join on to the pedestrian bridge to the south of the site; another platform for watching the world go by. Option one: gives an entrance directly from the cafe area out to the canal side. Aesthetically this doesn't work.
Option two views out from the cafe

Option two is the prefered option as it gives people more opportunity to watch the canal basin. The facade is however broken up by the two 2nd flight of stairs adjoining to the bridge.

Linzi, it's a nice idea connecting the two sides of the canal with the bridge. I'm also intrigued by the steps/seating arrangement (it's something I've done myself actually without getting it fully resolved as of yet) and I think the second option you have is definitely the one to develop.

As a precedent, have you seen OMA's Prada in New York? I always seem to harp on about OMA to people, particularly this project! Anyway, it has a performance space in the middle of the building in the basement; it acts as shop display during the day and the performance space with seating when needed. It's rather good, if you want any more information on it I have some so just email me! Here's some links anyway:
