Developing the adjacent site

The original site for the proposal was the other side of the canal basin, where the current City Inn Hotel is being constructed (overpowering block of a building). Moving the proposal meant that a piazza could be created and hold outdoor events, as well as the theatre addressing the canal and entrances from the city and holbeck.
The concept behind creating the public area is having a platform to watch from. The whole site is a 'theatre'; people walking through the site are a performance, an audience watching from the bridge, customers at the cafe viewing the narrow boats going by. The pedestrian bridge commences at the canal bridge to the west of the site, ramping up to the first floor level of the theatre, creating another entry level. At this point there are larger spans that accomodate people sitting out on the bridge/Pier. Grand steps to the entrance of the theatre also connect to the bridge. This emphasises the art of movement through the site as a major performance. Bridging over the canal basin its gives another audience point for viewing the floating stage, before reaching the adjacent side.As the bridge crosses the water, it becomes a canopy for people waiting for the waterbus and a place for leisure boaters to moor their vehicle and use water and shower facilities. A roof is formed over the cafe area, which allows people to watch the canal and to the opposite side view the piazza. Before changing direction and becoming a ramp, the corner becomes a series of steps and seating to watch people enter the canal via the river lock.
The bridge then forms a ramp, which is lit at night and falls into the ground facing the Theatre.
