Progress

After a tutorial and a group discussion I have looked at how I reached my ideas for my choosen site.

Initial ideas back in the summer included the extension of the waterbus and making it a commuter boat from Kirkstall Morrisons through to the City, with stops along the way. Canal boats could moor at Granary Wharf and interchange between the canal and trains. A 2nd entrance to the Train station would be proposed. After walking the route, I soon realised that even in rush hour the waterbus would take far too long, 1hr20 approx.

During early September the annual event of free museum entry spurred the idea of linking Armley Mills- Royal Armouries- Thwaite Mills. This would be the museum boat mainly used in the summer and at weekends encouraging tourism to the canal. A stop would be created at the Granary Wharf site with the potential for a 4th museum.

Leaving the Canal Boat aside for a short time, the project has concerntrated on the Granary Wharf stop. The site currently has a development being built on it, however the scale and uses are not to the best of what the site could offer. The site needs tourism and leisure activities. After ruling out the need for a new museum in Leeds, the site could benefit from an entertainment space. A partly outdoor theatre, something similiar to Covent Garden where perfformers entertain for free. Events could be linked to the Opera in the Park, where a stage floats by with the performer on and the audience remains on the site. Different events would be held throughout the year such as beer festivals, arts and crafts fairs and concerts. The whole site would be designed to be the "theatre".

In a discussion with my tutor, I realised the project will still be the "Canal Interchange", but an interchange of:

  • Transport

  • Ideas

  • Culture

Transport: Boat, Train, Foot, Cycle, Taxi

Ideas: Past, Present + Future

Culture: Arts, Performance + Entertainment
